Alone, Together Zeref was a lone wanderer for centuries, bearing the curse "Ankhselam" and thus existing between life and death. Like Mavis, Zeref holds family dear, to the end that he tried to use forbidden magic to revive his little brother, Natsu. Zeref angered the gods, and as punishment received the Contradictory Curse, which emits a deadly aura that kills all he touches. Even wild animals and plants die around him, unless he suppresses his love for all living things. It was this cursed figure that Mavis met while on her adventures, and Zeref realized that he had a friend in the young woman. She gladly learned magic from him, and Zeref was nearly moved to tears at having a true friend at long last. But Zeref's friendship wound up costing Mavis dearly. When she used Fairy Law to defeat Blue Skull, she too angered Ankhselam and was cursed. She accidentally killed Rita, Makarov's mother, while Rita gave birth, and she fled in horror. Mavis wandered alone for a year as an immortal death dealer, just like Zeref, but they eventually came face to face once again. Zeref explained himself, and even mentioned his burgeoning Alvarez Empire. Despite it all, Mavis loved him, and they embraced. The curse finally claimed Mavis' life when Zeref loved her back, and Mavis' nearly lifeless body was returned to Fairy Tail and preserved in an obelisk-shaped lacrima. Alike And Opposite The relationship between Mavis and Zeref is one of duality light and dark, life and death, love and hate. The two are alike in their plights as immortals, bearing the dreadful curse of Ankhselam and their love of family. But otherwise, they went in opposite directions with their eternal lives. Zeref represents the selfish side of immortality, using his ample time and power to concoct grand schemes to return to his ordinary family life with Natsu. He threatened all of Fiore so he could gain the Fairy Heart — the magic in Mavis' preserved body — to reverse time and undo the world so he could be with his brother once again. Mavis, meanwhile, learned to accept her fate and supports Fairy Tail from beyond the grave. She doesn't want her life back the way Zeref does, and instead, represents self-sacrifice. Zeref wallows in the despair of immortality, lamenting the intense loneliness of his existence and learning to scorn all other beings in his pursuit of ultimate power. Mavis, by contrast, learned to live vicariously through others and became a leader, rather than an overlord, and found hope and meaning in it. She is proud of the new generation of Fairy Tail wizards, and invests all her hopes and dreams in them. For Zeref, becoming a cursed immortal was the end of his happiness; for Mavis, it was just another chapter of the same story. Before the curse, Mavis loved and cherished her guild and friends; after being cursed, little changed in her heart. This duality put Mavis and Zeref at odds right to the end, even when they met in Fairy Tail's guild hall, where Mavis angrily cursed Zeref for causing so much grief. Still, she couldn't stop loving him, and she ended both their lives with her intense love and the curse's inversion of it. They found peace at last in each other's arms. The power of love is what brought Mavis and Zeref together, it was what drove them apart and it's what reunited them again in a peaceful and long-deserved death.
